UPDATE 3/3/2009: National Geographic selected this photo of Horsetail Falls in Yosemite to display as their Photo of the Day on their Adventure Web site:
adventure.nationalgeographic.com/2009/01/daily-catch/adve...

It's also available on their front page in their "Top Stories" (#2):
adventure.nationalgeographic.com/

Horsetail Falls backlit by the setting sun in Yosemite National Park, California. This was an amazing spectacle to witness. Happening only two weeks out of the year, the setting sun falls behind the vertical face of El Capitan, selectively lighting this waterfall with its orange sunset light.

The weather and the water flows often don't cooperate, I was shut out by a blizzard last year, so I was fortunate to see this on two consecutive evenings this year.

Check my Yosemite set for the more distant shots from the Merced River, a perspective that definitely provided a "lava flow" look.

Update February 2015: I replaced the original low res file with a larger one, produced using Adobe Lightroom 5 and Photomatix 5 (HDR).

Update 2017 - Frosty mornings in Yosemite in the fall provide the opportunity for capturing photos like this one. You can join me for my fall colors workshop in Yosemite!

Mist at sunrise provides both the prism and the canvas for a double circular rainbow as the sun emerges near Half Dome.

Flickr shows this as one of my top-ranked photos for interestingness.

Update 7/12/2011 - I ran across this photo of mine by accident... over on National Geographic!
travel.nationalgeograph%e2%80%8bic.com/travel/national-pa...
National Geographic licensed it a while back via Flickr/Getty, but I hadn't known its ultimate use at the time.

The Yosemite Conservancy reveals the history behind this tree, one of "the last of a group of elms planted by James Mason Hutchings in the mid-1800s."

For more photos from my explorations (and some technique tips) check out my blog.

-Added to the Cream of the Crop pool as my most favorited image.

Earth-threatening minor planet 2002 EX12 (comet 169P/NEAT) has been identified as the parent body of the alpha Capricornid shower. Many meteor shower guides list this minor shower as starting around July 15, while others put the start date as early as July 3.

As I wrap up this guide book I've been working on for(ever) years, I'm revisiting a few photos I took in the past to save copies in an appropriate size and resolution for printing. In many cases it's also turning out to be productive to revisit the color and contrast adjustments using Lightroom 5, which offers new adjustments for adjusting brightness and whites compared to Lightroom 3. The spot removal cursor can now be dragged to remove linear objects. There's a new radial cursor to help with dodge and burn operations. So overall, I just get better results.

I ended up using this as the chapter header for the Lone Pine to Mojave chapter in my 320-page guidebook Photographing California Vol. 2 - South, page 89.
