Canada Geese have returned. Seven goslings following a fierce-looking Canada Goose adult walked near us yesterday. Born mid-April at a nearby pond. I'm not a true birder; I do like to watch geese. I even scoop goose and duck poop occasionally.

"In a pattern biologists call “assortative mating,” birds of both sexes tend to choose mates of a similar size." allaboutbirds.org
Sure enough, Canada Geese couples that visit do seem well matched in size.

And we have the room to enjoy many feathered and furry (coyotes) wildlife. Graced, indeed.

Not quite raining early this morning for a change. Wood Ducks and honking Canada Geese awoke me.

A Canada Goose couple seems to have claimed our area. Not too much frightens them.

But Wood Ducks? Just the sound of the camera shutter many meters away alerts them to possible danger, and a sudden flush of ducks fills the air with high-pitched squealing.

I do love it here.

Thanks for looking!

I know you've all wondered if all twenty-three goslings grew larger ;) Here are just a few of those visiting the back forty on this lovely drizzly morning.

They are standing now to watch my husband rearrange a drip-line watering thingy. Wary, and best not to sit as they were.

Oh, this was one of my first times using the 500mm f/4 lens on the new Manfrotto monopod with a Jobu quick mount. I tend to tilt if not careful; that combo feels as though it weighs more than I.

Thanks for looking ;) Comments not necessary. What can you say about geese? We've read that they might migrate and might not.

According to Stan Tekiela in his bird field guild, adult Canada Geese "molt their primary flight feathers while raising young, rendering family groups flightless at the same time."

The neighbor with a lake texted on April 30 that she had seven goslings. These tiny wonders seem to grow quickly, although not much wing formation.

Cropped more than 50 percent, captured in the evening. All seven goslings and Canada Goose couple accounted for yesterday and visually this morning.

We do not regard Canada Geese as pests. Plenty of room for all, unless 1,000 of their closest associates arrive, as well.

Many thanks for looking! You may borrow my photo—just please link back to my photo page!

Didn't want to frighten the wary adult Canada Geese couple more than this. Most of the time we couldn't see the goslings. I felt bad flushing them out this much. Cropped by half.
