The Santa Croce Sanctuary is a pilgrimage destination situated at 2,045 meters of altitude right in the middle of the Fanes – Senes – Braies Nature Park in South Tyrol.
According to legend, the place that is today known as the Santa Croce Sanctuary was once inhabited by Volkhold of St. Lorenzen (San Lorenzo di Sebato). This count turned hermit had ordered the building of the present-day Church, which was then consecrated on 18 May 1484 by the Bishop of Bressanone. Later in 1650, the building was expanded and renovated and the statue of Jesus carrying the cross was housed inside.
