HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! Let's kick start 2019 with an image taken at the rather lovely White Beach on the south west coast of the Isle of Man. At this time of year the sun sets at a beautiful spot aligning with the coast and backlighting the mountains for dramatic effect. Dark rocks surrounded by swirling white foam of the incoming tide made for a compelling foreground which matched the dark mood I wanted to achieve with this. Thanks to everyone for their support of this page during 2018 – I’m very much looking forward to making 2019 a year filled to the brim with photographic goodness! This sunrise shot was taken on the shores of Lake Natron in the northern Rift Valley of Tanzania. The saline lake forms an inhospitable environment for most life forms, but enormous populations of flamingos do manage to thrive here as can be seen in the huge numbers spread across the horizon in this image. I quite like the tiny wisp of cloud in the right of the composition too – very random and totally by chance. An exceptionally peaceful, desolate and beautiful area.

A long exposure seascape image taken at Laxey breakwater on the east coast of the Isle of Man. Using a 10 stop ND filter allowed me to get this 2 minute 50 second shot during the middle of the day. The result is a polished smooth sea surface and soft dream like clouds contributing to an overall minimalist feel. A really nice corner of the island that I’ve never photographed before.

Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most incredible natural wonders in Africa. At 19km wide by 600m deep this colossal crater is one of the worlds largest not to be filled with water. What really makes it special however is the micro ecosystem which is found within where the very best of African wildlife can be found in microcosm in one condensed area. On the day I visited I happened to see a lot of Zebra, so I naturally used them as foreground interests in my shots of the crater.

This image was taken at Lake Natron in northern Tanzania. The dark skies in this area are probably the best I’ve ever seen with not a single trace of human light pollution to be seen anywhere. With the help of some friendly and very curious local Maasai I was walked through the pitch black to some lone trees which would give me the foreground I wanted. This tree was the perfect one because it sat alone, provided a clear view of Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano to the right, had beautiful symmetry with two background trees each side and the milkyway core positioned perfectly.

I am yet to come across any other astrophotography images taken in this little visited area so there’s a good chance this is a totally unique picture. This might be my best astro shot to date.
