The cherry picker is needed for maintenance, as it is carried out during the LHC shut-down. You can see on the outer ring the muon detectors, the inner massive part contains the supra-conducting magnets.
The CMS produces around 1 MB of data per collision. Though there are around 20 million collisions a second. Therefore most of the data is dumped in the local analysing engine, due to the fact of being just "normal" collisions.

CERN is celebrating their open days on 28/29 September. I managed to get a ticket for a ride 100 metres down from the ground to see the CMS experiment.
CMS stands Compact Muon Solenoid. So it is only 21.5 metres long and 15 metres in diameters and weights around 14'000 tons! Isn't this compact?

It is around Geneva, it is about 100 meters below the ground....
Follow me onto the next shot to see the real place.

Budweiser is one of the many klystrons needed to amplify the energy. The french versions have woman names like Emily.

LINAC4 (Linear Accelerator 4) will replace LINAC2 somewhere around 2020 to put even higher energy to work on the LHC. Construction started in 2009. They are fitting it out now with all the needed technology.

This element will accelerate the particle stream. So the middle will really see all this particles used later for the LHC.
