A tradition in Ireland during the 20th century was cleaning the house in advance of visits from family members and cousins from America. As with the 'Stations of the Cross', the furniture was scrubbed, the walls and rafters dusted, the curtains washed and ironed, the best crockery was taken out of storage boxes and everyone wore their Sunday best. It was important to give a good impression particularly to the American spouse and the children of the returning emigrant.
Photo shows Ann (nee Keating) Cheevers in 1954 scrubbing a kitchen chair at Cheever's Shop Lehana Cross Castleblakney county Galway in preparation for a visit from a Yank!
Ann's daughter Betty later married Joseph Reidy of Reidy's Bar Galway city.
