Notice the Volkswagen van in the background. This vehicle was a very popular minubus or camper van during the 1960s and 1970s. Often associated with the counterculture youth movement of the this period, it was sometimes referred to the 'Hippie Van'.

Betty Cheevers (later Reidy) & Joseph Reidy in the 'Hangar', Salthill.
The 'Pavilion Ballroom' was located in what is known today as Salthill Park. It was originally an airplane hangar at the RAF aerodrome in Oranmore. In 1925 Galway Corporation paid £400 for the structure which was re-erected in Salthill where for decades it served as a popular dance venue.
Affectionately known as the ‘Hangar’, it finally closed its doors in 1974.
Photographed donated by Ray Reidy, son of Betty and Joseph.

The view of what is now the Promenade (& carpark) in Salthill from the roof of the former Forster Park Hotel, April 1959.

Features to look out for:
Seapoint Ballroom on the extreme left.
Flagpole in the foreground.
Advertising posters on the sea wall including one for Fossetts' Circus.

Is that a Morris Minor van parked in front?
