In September 1879, primary school education came to Milltown with the opening of separate male and female schools located where the playing pitch is today in the village.
The two schools shared opposite ends of the same building.
Each school had two rooms. There was no play area.
The first principal in the boys' school was Pat McCarthy, aged twenty three years.
His sister Mary McCarthy, aged eighteen years, was appointed the first teacher and principal to the girls' school.
The two schools amalgamated on April 6th 1959.
In 1962, a new three-roomed school opened on a site approximately one mile outside the village on the road to Tuam.
On September 6th 1967, Kilgevrin National School, with George Garvey as principal and with 38 pupils, amalgamated with Milltown National School
