Scoil an Trionoide Naofa (Girls) opened along with its adjacent boy's school Scoil Mhichil on July 1st 1969.
The staff and pupils came from Scoil Iosagain located at Cemetery Cross in the building now occupied by Coláiste na Coiribe.
From the late 1950s, Mervue was becoming a new fast growing suburb of Galway city. The Catholic Bishop of Galway, Dr. Michael Browne, saw the need for the opening of a new Church and primary schools to serve the educational and religious needs of the predominately Catholic population of this area.
