It has been a slow seasonal change to spring this year in California. Even though the days are longer, the temperatures are still hovering in the winter coolness. A few years ago, I visited these hills during the peak spring colors. For a few short weeks, the grass has grown enough such that the hills exhibit a smooth and velvety texture. To top things off, high clouds helped soften the light showcasing these undulating hills surrounding this lake.

During the second cold morning of heavy mist over the bayou waterway, I decided to explore this small section where the trees were denser. It was much more difficult finding tree groupings and ideal compositions but after paddling around for 10 minutes I came across this scene with multiple twin-trunked trees. With the mist going strong I also managed to capture the mist streaking across the water surface. It felt more eerie in this enclosed area but at the same time the experience was memorable.

A few years ago Jeff, Tung, and I scouted some local areas for potential wildflower blooms. While we did not find any areas of dense blooms, we did find areas that showed potential for future springs should the conditions be right. Fast forward several years, I returned to one of the most promising areas during a wet spring. This time, the hillside was covered in a thick carpet of white lupines. Combined with the spring stormy clouds and sunset light, the evening turned out to be quite a beautiful show.

The badlands comprising the painted desert are some of the most beautiful desert landscapes that fully come alive in the pre-dawn or post-sunset light. I was lucky enough to spend a calm and wind-free evening out here from some aerial imaging where I could get unlimited perspectives of these historic hills. Each color band represents a different geological age in earth’s history. I most enjoyed seeing this ‘structure’ that resembled a large ship sailing through the desert.

The weather saved the best for last as our final sunset of the trip set the sky ablaze for over 45 minutes. This was my first time to this area of badlands thus a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mrbarbosa2000/">David and Paul gave me a tour of the area and showed me some of the best hoodoo formations. With their recommendation, I stuck around the ‘Magic Mushrooms’ for most of sunset and ultimately came away with several compositions from the area. I truly felt I was on an alien planet with unique and spectacular hoodoos at every corner.
