For my birthday, my beloved husband took me hiking on the prairie and reserved a room at a little boutique hotel in a nearby town.

Here he is admiring a view of the prairie from inside the 19th-century limestone barn that used to be part of a ranch and is now part of the preserve.

As with all my work, constructive critique is welcome, and faves are appreciated.

True story:

For my birthday, my husband reserved a room at a small boutique hotel in Cottonwood Falls, KS (population 903). We were there to hike at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, which is the big tourist attraction in the area.

When we checked into the hotel at 4:30pm on Friday, the gentleman who showed us to our room said that if we hurried, we would have just enough time to to see the county jail, which is not written up in any tourist literature but he assured us would be fun to visit. Apparently there haven't been any prisoners there for many years, but during business hours you could take a peek and "take photographs of yourself in the pokey," as the man put it. The courthouse closed at 5pm, so we had half an hour.

Of course we had to rush up the street before unloading our luggage. Strangely, although there were a few people at work on the first floor, no one greeted us or checked us through metal detectors or anything like would happen in the big city. We just walked upstairs. The man had told us to go into the courtroom on the second floor, past the jury box and through the jury deliberation room. Once there we saw photocopied signs that said "Jail" with arrows guiding the way.

In the jail (which dates to 1873) we found a huge cage set up off the floor containing two cells made of woven metal strips and with woven metal cots inside. There was a giant lever that we figured must have operated some sort of locking mechanism. Surrounding the cells was a larger room with big windows, a table and a sink.

It was fun poking around, but I started getting nervous that maybe nobody knew we were there, and it was getting close to closing. What would happen if we accidentally got locked in jail for the weekend? So we rushed back downstairs.

As with all my work, constructive critique is welcome, and faves are appreciated.
