Video, I think, gives a better sense of the scale of the Plaza, which is one of the largest city squares in the world. More than a million people can gather here at one time. As you can see, though, there were rather fewer people the day we visited. Drivers of classic car taxis also use this as a central gathering place, so clients can find them easily. This structure, which dominates the Plaza de la Revolución, memorializes a man whose actions were an inspiration for the Cuban Revolution. Partly nspired by Abraham Lincoln to eradicate slavery from Cuba, Marti died battling Spain for his country's independence. A poet as well as a revolutionary, several of Marti's poems was adapted as the Cuba's national song, "Guantanamera."
