Today I had a meeting scheduled in Topeka, KS, and when I realized that this national historic site was in the neighborhood, I felt compelled to visit. From the front lawn of the school you can see this mural commemorating the historic lawsuit painted on a private business. (As with all my work, constructive critique is welcome and faves are appreciated.)

Today I had a meeting scheduled in Topeka, KS, and when I realized that this national historic site was in the neighborhood, I felt compelled to visit. There is a sign before you enter this hallway warning about the violence and suggesting an alternate route in case you don't think you can handle it. I think the intent was to hint at what the brave young people integrating public schools faced when running the gauntlet of angry white protesters. (As with all my work, constructive critique is welcome and faves are appreciated.)

Day 289
Today I had a meeting scheduled in Topeka, KS, and when I realized that this national historic site was in the neighborhood, I felt compelled to visit. From the front lawn of the school you can see this antique gas station sign and old wooden building, and I was imagining that this what the children saw as they left for home at the end of the day. (As with all my work, constructive critique is welcome and faves are appreciated.)

Today I had a meeting scheduled in Topeka, KS, and when I realized that this national historic site was in the neighborhood, I felt compelled to visit. The historic site is housed in Monroe Elementary, Linda Carol Brown, a third grader at the time the landmark lawsuit was filed, had to walk six blocks to her school bus stop to ride to this segregated black school one mile away, while Sumner Elementary, a white school, was seven blocks from her house. (As with all my work, constructive critique is welcome and faves are appreciated.)
