Day 6
Because I'd volunteered to cook and cater a meal for 20 teachers and staff at my daughter's high school, I was too busy for much in the way of photography today. On the menu: Shepherd's Pie, Marinated Mixed-Vegetable Salad, and Apple Crisp. I was quite nervous this morning about how it would all turn out, but I think it was successful (because a number of folks returned for seconds). My biggest mess-up, though, was that I was trying to offer a vegetarian option and at 1:30 a.m. accidentally added beef broth instead of vegetable. Big whoops. Luckily the vegetarians were understanding and tried it anyway.

Day 176
Even though we only have one barrel planted with basil, I'm hard-pressed to cook fast enough to use it all. Tonight I made pesto.

Day 180
Previously I posted some pictures of the Egyptian onions in my garden. Although I enjoy having them around, I've always found the taste to be a bit too strong. So this year when I found a recipe for pickled Egyptian onions with a recommendation that this is the best way to eat them, I thought I'd give it a try. So how did they turn out? This evening at dinner time my daughter got them out of the refrigerator and spooned some out onto her plate to accompany her meal. "Mom, you make great pickles," she said.

Day 194
This summer my husband discovered the joy of smoking ribs, and he is quite good at it. He created his own marinade recipe, which he calls his "secret sauce," largely because he improvises and can rarely remember everything he put in it, so it remains a secret even to himself.
