Last year, we planted a little orchard. This year we experienced a historic drought. None of our little trees bloomed in the spring. But after a summer with temperatures above 100 degrees for weeks on end and with almost no precipitation, we finally had a nice soaking rain. I thought this tree was going to die, because the grasshoppers that descended with the drought ate almost all the leaves off of it. But after the rain, this brave little tree grew fresh new leaves at the ends of each twig and flowered. A little late, to be sure, but a sign of hope, I think. Hope, and great distress.
