User / jolynne_martinez / Volunteers Painting a Black Lives Matter Street Mural
JoLynne Martinez / 8,433 items
Today volunteers at six sites scattered throughout Kansas City painted Black Lives Matter street murals designed by local Black artists. The city supervised street closure and security and will seal the artwork to make it durable; a construction company cleaned the street to make it suitable for painting; and an architectural firm chalked in the lettering beforehand to make sure everything was uniform. According to news coverage in the Kansas City Star, "The project, KC Art on the Block, is believed to be the largest of its kind and spans 2,000 feet of street." They added that "The murals are the first piece of a three-part project. Up next: Vertical Black Lives Matter murals on walls. The last piece is to create a blueprint for others to add murals to their own neighborhood streets." I took photos at the location closest to me, where the design was created and painting overseen by artist Harold Smith. His design features multicolored letters and a quite from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: “We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.” (As with all my work, constructive critique is welcome, and faves are appreciated.)
