Continuing the theme of ‘firsts’, it’s not often my first image from any shoot gets published. The first few are normally test shots, but this one was different. Not only was this the first shot I took after arriving on Lunga, but it was also the first of an experiment in using Auto ISO.

We were given a watercolour of this scene as a wedding present and I have been wanting to recreate it in a photograph for a while. The sun position in the painting was recently replicated, but on the morning in question failed to materialise. In fact this was taken in steady rain prior to sunrise.

Masai Mara, Kenya
We spent some time with the herd that contained this mum and her baby and I was pleased to capture this frame showing two facets of elephant behaviour. The suckling baby is clearly one, but the mother’s feeding technique is here too. She wraps her trunk around the plant she wants to eat and then kicks her trunk with her foot to uproot the plant.
