The dishwasher door latch stopped working, so I opened the toolbox and took a look.

What a surprise - the little "ears" on the plastic handle had broken after 15 years of use. Each side of the handle has a little spring that pulls the latch into place when the handle is released. One spring was still in place on the broken handle, the other had disappeared. Really.

One of the broken "ears" on the dishwasher door handle, after removing the entire latch and handle mechanism from the dishwasher door.

The latch and handle mechanism after installing a new handle and a two new springs, one on each side.

Once I reinstalled the latch and handle mechanism, the door once again works just as it should.

The appliance parts shop on The Alameda in San Jose has, once again, helped me battle entropy and extend the useful life of an appliance.

There's something satisfying and slightly subversive about fixing something, especially fixing it myself, instead of throwing a machine away when only a few tiny parts of it have broken.
