A morning view of the radar tower and the summit of Mount Umunhum, south of San Jose, California.

Other than the flag pole, this tower is the only structure remaining from the former Almaden Air Force Station, south of San Jose, California. The station was operated by the 682nd Radar Squadron, United States Air Force, from 1958 to 1980. The tower is 84.5 feet (25.8 m) tall, and its interior is not accessible to the public.

The site is now owned by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (MROSD), which maintains road and trail access. MROSD has also installed displays about the former radar station as well as the mountain's significance to the indigenous people of the area.

This site was one of several similar installations built to detect potentially hostile aircraft approaching the United States during the Cold War. These radar sites were integrated into the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) air defense system.

The scaffolding, since removed, was in place to facilitate the application of a protective sealant and coating to the concrete tower.

A worker appears to be taking a photo of the Santa Clara Valley from a point near the top of Mount Umunhum, south of San Jose, California.

Evaporation ponds and a large pile of salt are visible across the south end of the San Francisco Bay.
