Hamilton AFB, known earlier by a number of names, was established as Hamilton Field in 1932. It remained active until the U.S. Air Force inactivated it in 1973 and decommissioned it in 1974.

The six U.S. Army B-17s that arrived during the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941 had departed from Hamilton Field on the previous day. See:

While many of the base's buildings were demolished in the 1980s and 1990s, most of the historic hangars have been converted into business space, and other buildings that are still closed are awaiting an uncertain future.
