Air intake from engine nacelle, Douglas DC-6.

On October 29, 1953, an Australian airliner crashed into a mountain south of San Francisco, killing all 19 people aboard. The aircraft, a Douglas DC-6 operated by British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines (BCPA), carried Australian registration VH-BPE and was named "Resolution."

Ironically, after two days of flying from Sydney, with stops in Fiji and Hawaii, "Resolution" was just minutes from landing at San Francisco International Airport.

I took these photos when I visited the site of the crash in 1993.

A steel gear assembly, probably from one of the four Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engines. The heat from the post-crash fire was so intense that engine parts made of light alloys melted or burned away, leaving only the steel parts behind.

Just before VH-BPE struck the mountain, this 13-foot outer section of the left wing struck a tree and was torn from the aircraft. Remnants of the registration letters are still visible on the underside of this wreckage.

Close-up of the structure where the left outboard wing tip was torn from the rest of the aircraft moments before the crash.

This is the upper surface of the 13-foot section of the left wing from VH-BPE. Lying some distance from the impact point, this is the largest piece of wreckage that remained in 1993. Many other parts remained around the impact site, but all were smaller and many aluminum parts had been melted by fire.
