A Volkswagen engine that was modified and used to power a home-built airplane. Photographed at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington, July 1993.

All of my experience with VW Type I engines is with later models. I think that this is a late 1950s - early 1960s 36 HP engine, with the generator pedestal removed.

Ex-USAF Boeing KC-97L s/n 53-0317 being broken up at Stockton Metropolitan Airport (SCK), May 2001.

This Pratt & Whitney R-4360 radial engine and the attached propeller were scrapped. The exterior of the engine was extensively corroded by bird droppings. Some indication of this engine's exposure to birds can be seen on the propeller blade extending to the left.

The following instruction is stenciled on the propeller blade extending to the right:

CAUTION ENG. PRESERVED
DO NOT TURN PROPELLER

This must have been applied when the aircraft was in storage at Davis-Monthan AFB prior to its purchase by Hawkins & Powers.

Cut-away example of a Lycoming O-290 engine at the former San Jose State University aviation campus on Coleman Avenue. Generations of SJSU aviation students learned about aircraft engine overhaul at that facility.
