My father, William B. Abbott III, used a wind-up (spring-powered) Kodak Brownie 8mm movie camera to capture this action. He had the original films converted to analog VHS cassette in 1990, and just recently I converted the analog VHS videos into .mp4 digital video.

USS Valley Forge never received the angled-deck and other modifications that many of her Essex-classs sisters received. She was decommissioned in 1970, she then provided the main locations for the science-fiction film "Silent Running," and was sold for scrap in 1971.

US Coast Guard High Endurance Cutter Rush, WHEC-723. Time-exposure made at San Diego, July 1983. The aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, CV-63, is visible across the bay at NAS North Island.

WHEC-723 is the ninth ship of the Hamilton class of high endurance cutters. She was launched in 1968, commissioned in 1969, and decommissioned in 2015.
