Leland High School, October 1982: A 1969 "Autostick" VW Beetle belonging to a friend's mother was pressed into service by current and former cross-country runners to join the homecoming parade.
These guys actually convinced the school administrators that "Meet Wagon" meant that this was a car that they drove to running events.

1982 VW Rabbit Diesel L, at my Dad's house on Hampton Drive in February, 1985. This car was built in VW's factory at Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, although I believe that the 52 HP engine and 5-speed transmission were manufactured in West Germany.
The personalized license plate was a reference to the fact that this was our family's third VW Rabbit - my older brothers had 1977 and 1980 models.

I replaced the original steel wheels and their 155/80 R13 tires with VW OEM alloy wheels from a Scirocco, along with Michelin 175/70 R13 XZX tires. Not much of a change by today's standards, but it made a real difference.

I added a suite of VDO instruments using the center console that VW produced for the 1983-84 Rabbit GTI. The fourth instrument was a VDO "Cockpit" instrument in its own housing. The four instruments were oil pressure, oil temperature, ammeter and voltmeter.
If I recall correctly, the interior color was called "Russet" by VW. The exterior paint was "Cashmere."
