'On the 3rd October, 1918, near ESTREES, north of ST. QUENTIN, this soldier proceeded to a wounded companion through 150 yards of heavy shell fire, dressed his wound and helped him to shelter. Later in the day he was alone at a Motor Loading Post, devoid of cover, and though wounded himself, he remained with a severely wounded man under heavy shell fire for over an hour, and tended him until he could be rescued.'

This newspaper account of the release of the 8th Division POWs is worth reading:
"Australian rescue teams in Japan and Singapore have begun the great task of locating and evacuating remnants of the 8th Division of the A.I.F. who were taken prisoner in Malaya in 1942.
When Allied troops occupied Singapore on Wednesday they found 5500 members of the 8th Division on the island. Officers said most of the men were in poor physical condition."
