Most of the pioneers that settle in this area of Pennsylvania were self-educated people, and only few had received formal education. But they were determined to supply a better education to their children, and the kids were enrolled in subscription schools, or what we would call now private schools.

Thanks to the Cranberry Historical Society, for letting us visit and take photos of these wonderful and historic items, as well as the written information they handed us. We appreciate it!

And the rest, is history!

MY WORK:

My line of photography has its main focus on nature, but I also do some of city life, solarisation, and abstract art.

ABOUT GROUPS:

I would gladly submit my photos to the groups that would allow me to see their pages and be part of them. Please, don’t invite me to groups that will show my work once, and by invitation. I rather be part of a group that will allow me to choose my own material, and decide what to put and when. Remember, we are artists, and very temperamental ;)

EXPLORE:

Also, I’m very proud to say that thirteen of my photos made it to Explore. If you’d like to see them, please go to my Explore set.

TO MY FRIENDS:

Flickr has giving me opportunity to meet a group of wonderful people. Thanks for making me feel so proud of what I do and love. You know who you are…

MY THANKS:

Thanks for coming and for viewing my photos. I appreciate all comments, so leave one, if you want to.

Have great day, and enjoy the ride!

Martha.

...in those days!

I just can't imagine walking to school on foot during the severe winter winter weather. When students arrived numb to school, the teacher made them soak their hands in a basin to thaw their hands. Older boys were assigned to carry in coal locally produced coal from the coalhouse outside. We have improved, that's for sure!

This stove is part of an exhibition of a an old school in Pennsylvania that opened its doors to students from 1874 until 1951. Thanks to the Cranberry Historical Society, for letting us visit and take photos of these wonderful and historic items, as well as the written information they handed us. We appreciate it!

If you want to see more of this wonderful historic items, go my set Pioneer School.

The size of the school windows were large compared to today's windows, as they needed to let in as much solar light as possible. The electric bulb was invented on 1879, and electrical service became available to school until the mid 1930's.

Things, got better!

The wooden desks were mounted to the floor, and had sits with backrests and iron frames. They were made of wood and were all connected.

Things got better!

These were the basic things that kids used at school during this time period. This is how the basin looked, were children thaw their hands after a long walk from home during the long and harsh winter months. A long handle dipper was keep in a bucket and everyone drank out of the dipper. The soap that was available those days were made with wood ashes, animal fat and water, a large cooking kettle, and processed over and open fire.

Things got better over the years!
