The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they display knowledge.

There is no speech or language
where their voice is not heard.

-- Psalm 19:1-3

Assignment: Sky.
The full spectrum of colors, textures and phenomenon the sky has to offer.
Clouds, sunsets, sunrises, rainbows, night shots, stars, crepuscular rays are all welcome.

Submit your quality sky shots, the sky should be the dominant subject of the photo.

Sky is never static. even on a plain blue, sunny day, it's doing something.

What i'd like people to contribute here are photos that try to capture the sky in its ever-changing, ever-amazing glory. something that caught your eye and made you take a photo.

Clouds, brilliant sunsets, sunrises, stars, the northern lights...anything that you've felt compelled to capture because what you saw at that moment resonated inside of you.

Restriction: Must have at least 50% Sky.
50% sky includes clouds.

What it took:
1) Thunderstorm.
2) Covered porch.
3) Set the camera up on a tripod in bulb mode with a remote trigger.
4) Sit there for a long time, take a bunch of long-exposure pictures.
5) Get a lot of black or white skies. (Enjoy the show anyway.)
6) Twiddle with exposure settings.
7) Eventually get an OK capture.

(My first attempt at shooting lightning.)

Assignment
water: we all need it. It's all around us. Let's see your interpretation.

Dare: use more than one form ie. Liquid and ice etc.

What it took/Strobist info
Similar setup as for the first shot for the coin stack a couple weeks ago. This time though, instead of a white background I used a black one and instead of the coins I had a vase of water. I setup the flash on a clamp and set it to 1/16th power to allow continuous firing. Then I dropped an apple and started shooting. I had to do about 8 takes before I got the timing right.

Learn how to light at Strobist.

If My people, who are called by My name, humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land. -- 2nd Chronicles 7:14

I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. -- 1st Timothy 2:1-2

Assignment: Abandoned
Every neighborhood has them, some more than others. I’m talking about the houses, factories, barns, gas stations, sheds etc. that have long since been abandoned and left to rot away. This week I encourage you to go exploring and bring back images of these places to share with us. Feel free to use photo editing software to enhance the mood of your image, if you wish, but no combining multiple images.

Dare: See if you can evoke some emotion with your image. Some of these old structures have a romantic air about them, some are sad, some are frightening! What do you feel? …see if you can capture this in the frame.

Restriction: No people please.

What it took:
I stopped by an abandoned dairy farm on my way to work and snapped some shots. It was actively worked up until about a year and a half ago. It sits right on a main, secondary road and is apparently owned by Mr. Trespassing (first name No) as his name is plastered all over the place. Being right in the middle of town now, I believe it's scheduled to be demolished and the land used for higher value endeavors.

Other than glass from the broken windows and some tagging, the place is pretty clean and empty. The only two items not part of the building were the wheelbarrow with a missing wheel and this chair. I thought this chair, just sitting the middle of the room was kind of interesting and took this shot.

To get a gritty look, I pushed a pretty deep S-curve to get some contrast, increased saturation and then added heavy high-pass sharpening. For most photos the sharpening would have been too much, but I think it works well for this one.

Click here for other shots from this location.
