Halfway between Grundafjordur and Stykkiisholmur is this enormous lava field created from an ancient lava flow from 4,000 years ago. Seemingly frozen in time the elaborate shapes are blanketed in thick green moss with vibrant hues of green, red and orange. Sagas suggest that a local berserker cleared a path through the lava field but was rewarded with murder on completion of the task!

Known as the Golden Waterfall, the River Hvita plunges down 230 feet into the ravine of Gullfossgljufur. The series of falls are spectacular with huge volumes of water cascading down into the chasm.
