The Spiral Jetty is an earthwork created in April 1970 by American sculptor Robert Smithson (1938-1973). The earthwork sculpture, made up primarily of basalt rocks from the surrounding area, is a 1,500 foot-long jetty ending in counterclockwise coil. It juts onto the lakebed by Rozel Point, sometimes dry and at times covered by water, depending on the lake level.
