This is a project that I originally built about 12 years ago as a case mod for a UPS for my computer, but the UPS part eventually (after 7 years or so) stopped working, so I pulled out all the guts & made it into a surge protector. The two red lights are tied to the two heavy-duty Metal Oxide Varistors that do the surge protection, and if the red light goes out, that means that particuarl MOV is bad & needs replaced.
