While the town of Les Baux-de-Provence dates back to medieval times, it was built at the site of a very ancient settlemen. From the Neolithic Age (ca. 6000 years BC), people lived here in cave dwelings.

The Chapel was built by the confraternity of white penitens (Pénitents Blancs) in the 17th century. It was in a ruinous state when the Confréries de Langue d’Oc rebuilt it in 1937 and dedicated it to St. Estelle.
