The cathedral was built in the Norman-Romanesque architectural tradition and was consecrated in 1007 in thr presence of William, Duke of Normandy and King of England. After the cathedral was severely damaged in the 12th century, the rebuilding was done in Gothic style. Construction of the dominant crossing tower was started in the 15 century but was only completed in the 19th century.
