Jumièges Abbey, a Benedictine monastery, was founded approx. in 654 and in 841 it was burnt down by the Vikings. After rebuilding, it became one of the most important monasteries of France up to the Huguenots' wars in the 16th century, when it was destroyed again. In 1649 Jumièges was taken over by the Maurist Congregation which restored some of the former grandeur. The French Revolution, however, ended its existence as a monastery, leaving only impressive ruins.
