Abbiategrasso is a small town in the fertile Po valley, approx. 22 km from Milan. It existed already in Roman times and a document of 1304 refers to a "Habiate qui dicitur Grasso" which gradually transformed into Abbiategrasso.
The Basilica Santa Maria Nuova was built in 1388 to celebrate the birth of Gian Galeazzo Visconti's son. It is preceded by a Renaissance portico and its proanos is attributed to Donato Bramante.
