During the following centuries, adjacent buildings were bought to form the present Palazzo. The facade to Piazza Maggiore shows a transition style from Gothic to Renaissance. San Petronio, a minor basilica, dominates the Piazza Maggiore. It is dedicated to St. Petroius who was a bishop of Bologna in the 5th century. Contrary to most medieval churches with west-east orientation, San Petronio was built in north-south orientation with the main altar in the south instead of the east. With the enormous dimensions – lenght 132 m, width 60 m, vault height 45 m – San Petronio is the 5th largest church in the world. The enclosed space of 258.000 square meters makes it the largest brick church ever built.

The facade was designed by Domenico da Varignana and started in 1538 by Giacomo Ranuzzi. Although many artists had provided plans the the completion of the facade, it remained unfinished.

Bologna is referred to as "la dotta, la grassa, la rossa" which means "the learned one, the fat one, the red one".

The learned one refers to the fact that the oldes university of the Western World stands at Bologna. Already in the Middle Ages it earned a great reputation as a center for legal studies.

The fat one refer to the agricultural wealth of the region and its culinary tradition which is not well suited when one wants to loose weight.

The red one refers to the colour of the facades and roofs and/or the fact that the communist party respectively parties with a left tendency ruled the city since World War II.
