The large fountain outside the Italian garden of Villa Lante represents Pegasus and the Muses. It refers to the myth that a winged horse struck the earth with his hoof and a spring burst forth. This incident occurered on Mount Helicon, the residence of the muses.

Villa Lante was built for Cardinal Gambarat in the 16th century, shortly after the completion of Palazzo Farnese at Caprarola, built by his relatives. In 1656 the Villa became the property of Ippolito Lante Montefeltro della Rovere, Duke of Bomarzo, Since 1971 the villa is a property of the Italian State.
