In 1504, Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, the future Pope Paul III, acquired the estate at Caprarola and had a villa built between 1559 and 1530. He had bequethed his estates to his relatives, the Farnese Dukes of Parma, and after his death in 1589 his fabulous art collection was transferrred to Charles III of Spain, residing at Naples, so that the fully frescoed villa is quite empty.
