Passignano sul Trasimeno has a long aeronautical tradition. The first Italian hydroplane school was set up here in 1916 by the Italian Army and the company SAI. For more than 50 years the company was responsible for innovative aeronautical projects which were made possible by the bravery and dedication of many pilots, among them Ambrogio Colombo and Arturo Ferrarin, who died on the banks of Lake Trasimeno during test flights. During the first Passignano Hydroplane Pilot Meeting in 1968 the memorial to the fallen pilots was inaugurated and the The Frecce Tricolori performed over Lake Trasimeno for this event. The memorial was created by Romeo Mancini and depicts six interwoven aeroplanes, three with noses pointing downwards to the lake and three ready to fly up into the sky.

If you had never visited Lake Trasimeno, you at least heard of it in school: In 217 BC during the Second Punic War, the Carthaginian forces under Hannibal had defeated the Roman army on the northern shore of this lake.
