Castel del Monte is situated on a hill near Andria in Puglia. Emperor Frederick II (Federico Secondo/Friedrich II.), who had inherited the land from his mother Constance of Sicily, had initiated the building in the 1240s. It had never been intended as a defensive fortress but as a residence of Frederick II when he went hunting in Puglia. In the 18th century the furnishings and the marble decorations were removed so that the interior is rather bare.

Castel del Monte is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
