Ambrosius Bosschaert I., Antwerpen 1573 - Den Haag 1621
Blumenvase im Fenster / Vase of Flowers in a Window (1618)
Mauritshuis, Den Haag
This painting of a colourful bouquet of thirty types of flowers is a masterly work by Ambrosius Bosschaert. He depicted the flowers meticulously, so that each one is easily recognisable. This painting provides an overview of the most beautiful flowers known to Bosschaert, including the tulip, which was still a rarity in Holland at the time. Bosschaert based his bouquet on separate sketches he had made throughout the year. This allowed him to compose a bouquet of flowers that in real life do not bloom at the same time.

Antonis van Dyck, Antwerpen 1599 - London 1641
Bildnis der Anna Wake - Portrait of Anna Wake (1628)
Mauritshuis, Den Haag, Niederlande
In 1627, the Antwerp cloth merchant Peeter Stevens had his portrait painted by Anthony van Dyck. When Stevens got married a year later, he commissioned Van Dyck to paint this portrait of Anna as well. Anna was placed on the left, so that she did not have her back turned to Peeter. But actually convention dictated that the man should hang on the left and the woman on the right.
After Rubens, Van Dyck was the most important portraitist of his day. He was popular because he made his patrons look just a bit more beautiful and elegant than they really were.
