Sunset from our room over the bay at Langebaan.

We booked the Farmhouse Hotel in Langebaan for 2 nights, giving us time to explore the West Coast National Park and Velddrif. The hotel is located at the far end of Langebaan and only a short 10 minute drive to the Langebaan Gate into the park. This allow me to get up early and be at the gate at 07.00 to do a spot of bird watching before returning for breakfast.

We had booked a Superior Room and were given Room No 10 which was on the ground floor with a double aspect view over the lagoon and the hotel swimming pool. We could also enjoy the wonderful sunsets over the lagoon each evening.

The room was very comfortable and spacious.

The West Coast is known for being windy, and despite the heat of the day, we actually lit the wood burning stove in our room each evening.

Views from the Berg River, Velddrif, West Coast, South Africa.

We took an hour long boat trip on this small boat with Dan the Boatman (a very silent type!) upstream where the river opens up onto wide mudflats. It is really worthwhile doing to get closer to the birds.

We caught the boat from a small bar along ‘Bokkom Laan’ (Bokkom Avenue on Google Maps) - this is where bokkoms (dried fish) are made in the same traditional way which dates back more than 300 years.

There are a couple of places to eat here which are located on the edge of the river so you can do a bit of birdwatching as you eat One is more a bar, the other Die Vishuis, is a small restaurant with a wide stoep providing covered outdoor tables serving well priced food.
