Hotel Le Grand Chalet, La Tremblade.

Looking across the swimming pool to the hotel - these rooms all have sea views. Our room is above the doorway with a balcony painted green.

This hotel is all about location. With direct access to the beach and far reaching views across the water to the Île d'Oléron. This was the place to stay if you want to enjoy a stunning sunset.

There is a waterside swimming pool and lawn overlooking the beach which is a lovely spot to relax.

The Room 16 was bright and clean with a comfortable bed, a separate WC and shower room, not the largest of room but being able to sit out on the balcony and watch the sunset was lovely. Air conditioning has been installed but we did not seem to get it to work - it was 28c and the room was very warm. The room also has a kettle with a couple of mugs, a small fridge and some water which was good.

We had dinner on the hotel terrace overlooking the beach and really enjoyed both the taste and presentation of the food. The views were stunning as the sun began to set.

Docking in the town of Royan onboard La Gironde (Bacs Girondins ferries) the ferry taking us across the mighty Gironde River to from Le Verdon-sur-Mer to Royan.

It is all very quick, our car was at the front, and by the time we got down some stairs they were already unloading and our car was at the front!!!

At 13.05 we decided to join the queue for the 13.45 ferry crossing between Le Verdon-sur-Mer to Royan - they say you should arrive 30 minutes before departure. You cannot book and we wanted to ensure we got on the ferry, it turned out the ferry was full at the time of departure.

You pay at the kiosk on arrival it was €5 each for us and €37 for the car. They certainly pack the cars in very tightly and there is very little room to get out of the car. They also unload very fast (we were still up on the deck when the ramp went down and our car was at the front!

The crossing took about 25 minutes, the weather was good so we sat on the open deck to enjoy the views. The river is pretty wide at this point but you get some great views as you arrive into Royan.
