Mendoza Ranch, Outer Point Reyes

Woke up grumpy and sore on Saturday, but this bubo completely lifted my spirits, like a fog lifting out of my brain.

If you have not read elsewhere, migration is so ON at Point Reyes and Bodega Bay - migrants and vagrants galore. Very fun times. These last two days were filled with birds and some really really nice birders too. (you know who you are!!)

San Pedro Ponds, Morgan Hill

Happy Winter Solstice to all! I will be kind of sorry this year to see the days get longer again and have the sun start going higher in the sky. We have had some really really nice "low winter sun" days here in the way south bay, with clear dry sparkling air. Of course we need rain, and my hands are so chapped from going out every possible morning to shoot, but it has been the greatest luxury so far in my first year of retirement, to be able to be outside and enjoy winter light.

UCSC Arboretum

We had business that took us to Santa Cruz yesterday, but had enough time for an hour at the arboretum. Have been anxious to get there since seeing reports that the Allen's are back. I could spend the whole day just watching the male Allen's display for the females, and fight with the Anna's.

Yosemite National Park

Tom and I get excited about being outside pretty much every day, but some days are nothing short of magic. Yesterday was one of those days. We thought it would be a pretty cool trifecta if we saw a White-headed Woodpecker, a Pileated Woodpecker, and a Williamson's Sapsucker. Of course we were just dreaming out loud, but we got all three! This Pileated Woodpecker flew into a tree 8 feet in front of us and about 4 feet up the tree. We were able to just stay in the shadows and watch the bird for at least 15 minutes. And so sweet when the bird gives you a photo opp to remember it by....
