Mergus serrator....a last of the day roadside attraction that capped an excellent day of birding in Santa Cruz and at Moss Landing (well spotted, Tom!!)

Moss Landing

Identification confirmed by Dr. Ryan Philips! This bird was first spotted by fellow birder John Fox when the two of us were watching other raptors harrassing each other over the marshes just north of Jetty Rd. We both noticed the white uppertail coverts, and then the underside coloring of the bird and immediately thought Swainson's, but had a hard time believing that it really was that bird.

"Supercilium, white auricular, malar, white throat, carpal comma, long tail with numerous fine bands, white uppertail coverts (as we reported to him), heavy spotting verse streaking. All SWHA!"
