Reserva Biologica Nosara

We surprised this heron when we walked out of the reserve out to the river, but it didn't run away too fast. The next day we heard a pair of herons making low bellowing mating calls. This time of year was good for witnessing a lot of nest building and courtship rituals.

The one and only opportunity that I had to get a photo of this species was while we were having lunch on our first day in Nosara. Lucky that I had my camera with me at lunch (mainly because I am endlessly paranoid and carried it with me everywhere). The jay was most likely interested in our lunch; I have heard that they can be quite aggressive around restaurants.
