One of the first birds we saw on the big Island, on our wonderful long day with Jack Jeffrey. This is yet another bird that has been introduced to the island (in this case from the Himalayas) to be hunted as game. The males are stunningly beautiful.

On this first day we did not start getting any rain or mist until well into the day. We did not quite get how lucky that was until many days later after having been through quite some rainy hikes.
This was a shot late in the day, through a nice light sheen of rain.

This sweet little guy is the oldest known 'elepaio of any species, at 23 years old, as identified by his three bands of bling. Jack recognized him straight away and said he had been there for his last banding to count the candles on his cake!

This honeycreeper has evolved to be more of a wood creeper than a nectar feeder. It is really interesting to see how all of these endemic and introduced species end up specializing and filling out the various habitat and feeding niches.
This creeper does all of the expected creeper trunk climbing and upside down walking behaviors, but also has a cute little flutter/hover that it does sometimes while working at the bark.

The 'Akepa was one of several highly endangered species that we saw on Hawaii, with perhaps only a few thousand left in the wild. This is a tiny bird, and works the ohia buds looking for bugs and caterpillars.
