The rice was soaked for 2 days before the mochi party. It then needs to be thoroughly drained prior to steaming.

This is the usu, the mochi pounding vessel. This is a unique sculptural object created by Ken Matsumoto of ArtObjectGallery. This is the first time that mochi has been made in this usu. It is sitting here filled with hot water, and capped to keep the cold rainy air from chilling it. In the background you can see the rice steamer, and further back you can see the sake warming up.

Bill, Jeff, and Tom are toasting this ceremonial occasion. Or just finding a great reason to drink sake at 9:30 in the morning (clock has not fallen back).

The tulle wrapped around the rice as it steams keeps it from sticking to the pan.
