Happy Winter Solstice to all! I will be kind of sorry this year to see the days get longer again and have the sun start going higher in the sky. We have had some really really nice "low winter sun" days here in the way south bay, with clear dry sparkling air. Of course we need rain, and my hands are so chapped from going out every possible morning to shoot, but it has been the greatest luxury so far in my first year of retirement, to be able to be outside and enjoy winter light.

I have been watching this little guy fly around the ponds for years, but this is the closest he has ever let me get. This is the closest ANY Belted Kingfisher has ever let me get.

This winter we have a pair of Northern Harriers that are showing up very regularly at the neighborhood ponds. I see the female every time I visit, and the Grey Ghost about every third time. They cruise the little channels of the ponds, and hide on the banks in the weeds.
