Photographic opportunities come along in many different ways., Sometimes it's just the setting!
Yes it's a Heron., yes everyone sees them on a regular basis., and yes there's a zillion uploads of them
But with the sun setting and a beautiful reflection off the water., we thought this was a 'special' Heron
So here it is

They are members of the same family., they are both fisher birds., share a similar diet., and are about the same size.....
But the thing that struck me when comparing this Heron with the Bittern (previous shot) wasn't the obvious colour difference., but It was the differing lengths of their talons
The Bittern's talons are much longer
Evolution has clearly decided that Bitterns need longer claws., the question is.. why?
It could be as simple as keeping it's balance in the wet Reed bed
But if you have any other ideas please let us know

Yes., you read that right!
In the previous picture I said Herons never seem to be too far away from 'trouble'
The Coot here is probably about 10% of the size of the Heron but clearly decided he was getting too close to his nest and took the Heron (and us) completely by surprise by going on the attack
He could only reach as high as his feet., but a with a lot of noise and and a few pecks the big bird was successfully evicted from the lake!
If I hadn't seen it., I would never have believed it!

The Heron., the bird who never seems far away from trouble., but life around the pools and lakes just wouldn't be the same without them
They are a big., powerful., impressive birds., but also have a 'personality' about them probably best described as something akin to a 'muppet villain'
When the Heron drops in., you're never quite sure what's going to happen next., but it'll probably make you smile., and that's superb when you have a camera in your hand!
Take a look at the next picture and you'll see what I mean

Anyone who has watched Heron's would have noticed they can take an instant dislike to any other bird who dares to enter their perceived 'territory'
Our Heron was of course used to Little Egret's., so it was probably a bit of shock when the giant sized version dropped in.,and turned out to be even bigger than he was
Never mind., lets try and chase him off anyway!
When we took this picture everything seemed to be going to plan for our Heron., except that the Great white Egret simply flew around in a circle., landed from where he started., and continued to catch his fish
Meanwhile the Heron retreated to the bank watching on in disgust! No doubt contemplating what on earth that Egret had been eating to make him so big!
