Anyone who has watched Heron's would have noticed they can take an instant dislike to any other bird who dares to enter their perceived 'territory'

Our Heron was of course used to Little Egret's., so it was probably a bit of shock when the giant sized version dropped in.,and turned out to be even bigger than he was

Never mind., lets try and chase him off anyway!

When we took this picture everything seemed to be going to plan for our Heron., except that the Great white Egret simply flew around in a circle., landed from where he started., and continued to catch his fish

Meanwhile the Heron retreated to the bank watching on in disgust! No doubt contemplating what on earth that Egret had been eating to make him so big!

Snow white and beautiful., a photographers delight
Or is it?

We have all been 'there'., Settings all nicely set-up for a gleaming white bird in the sun., and then out of the shadows comes a dark brown Marsh Harrier

I guess we are not the only ones who have been 'caught' in that trap! Snap away at the Harrier so as not to miss the moment., or change the settings risking that the magic close-up moment would have probably flown off!

We tend to the first option., flicking away at the settings as we 'go'., but there isn't a right or wrong answer to the question... just do your best and good luck!

Sometimes in life you just have to dive straight in if you want to get what you want

Our Egret clearly had this mind-set., that fish is mine and nothing is going to stop me!

Sure enough a couple of seconds later out came the fish and mission accomplished

Heron's., Egret's. and if your lucky enough Bittern's are the great entertainers when in comes to 'fishing watch'. and they are usually good for a photograph or two!

With almost angelic looks (except to the fish!) the ponds and lakes of the UK just wouldn't be quite the same without the Egret

The remarkable fact about what we now take as a regular sight is that It only first appeared in the UK in significant numbers in 1989 and then only bred here in 1996

There are now around 4500 resident birds in the UK plus a significant number of incoming migrants each year

So our little 'angel with a bite' will probably become an even more regular sight in the coming years which is great news for us., but probably not such good news if you happen to be a fish!

As the name suggests, he's big!

Great white egrets look similar to little egrets, but they are much larger., about the same size as our familiar grey heron., some are definitely even bigger

And there is a link here., it is a member (like the little egret) of the heron family and I've seen it described as a large heron with all-white plumage

Standing up to 1 m (3.3 ft) tall you really cannot miss him! However, we had to wait some time before this one decided to come close

In fact when he flew over we both had our *1.4 converters on and he was too big for the lens., but wow! what an impressive and beautiful bird
